The term masseuse is a French word that refers to a female who practices massage. (Males in the industry were known as masseurs.) This term has now been replaced with Massage Therapist. Masseuse is an old fashioner term implying that a female would provide a massage, she would not necessarily be trained in any specific manner or have had to take exams and or pay to be licensed and insured. It is not a respected term, We are now known as Massage Therapist.
To call oneself a massage therapist one has to earn the title. A licensed massage therapist must complete extensive training in person at a massage school. Massage therapists have to take continued education classes and keep their licenses intact in order to continue practicing.
